Dear Alice | Extra Spaces
/In this week’s episode of Dear Alice, we’re talking about extra spaces! Extra space is definitely a luxury that is often not fully utilized. Some of us have extra spaces that have been hanging out purposeless and collecting dust. Let’s bring some life into those extra spaces! You can listen to this podcast episode on Apple Podcast, Spotify, or Google Podcast.
Extra spaces are the small pockets of space throughout your home like playrooms, closets, reading nooks, etc. They are opportunities for you to dream and mold your home to reflect your lifestyle. Guest bedrooms are great, but they would be better utilized dedicated to your hobbies and the ways you spend your free time on a more consistent basis.
There are so many ways we’ve customized spaces in our interior design work! We’ve busted through a client’s guest bedroom wall that was next to her master bedroom to make her a bigger closet for all of her collected pieces. For Tan France’s closet, we utilized his attic to create the ultimate dressing room. Adding striped wallpaper and a full wall of mirrors, tricked your eye and made the room feel bigger, brighter, and more expansive.
If you have that extra space around your home that you haven’t been using, get creative (and don’t forget to think about yourself and the space you would want to occupy!) Consider turning an old guest room into a playroom, or use it to expand your closet, create a homework room (multiple computers and maybe a bigger table so it doesn’t take over the dining table), use the extra space to make a nook dedicated for reading, a game room, or your own gym or work out space, a prayer room if it’s part of your culture, design a playful bunk room (nice for big families who have tons of sleepovers), the possibilities are literally endless!
If you take anything away from this week’s episode- be selfish, and allow yourself to take up space- you deserve it!
