Greenery for the Win

Pantone’s color of the year is Greenery.

“We know what kind of world we are living in: one that is very stressful and very tense. This is the color of hopefulness, and of our connection to nature. It speaks to what we call the ‘re’ words: regenerate, refresh, revitalize, renew. Every spring we enter a new cycle and new shoots come from the ground. It is something life affirming to look forward to.” —Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director of the Pantone Color Institute

If you are bold and daring, Verner Paton’s 1969 lobby design for Spiegel Verlagshaus is the perfect inspiration for a bright green interior. But for more practical applications, this year’s color can be intimidating because of its strong personality. So here are some practical ways to incorporate Greenery into your wardrobe and home.

Greenery’s yellow undertone may turn complexions sallow, so utilize this color in accent—like these shoes in Emilia Wickstead’s RTW Spring 2017 collection.

As illustrated in this gorgeous monochromatic outfit, the wonderful thing about Greenery is how beautifully it pairs with other greens. So use the more complimentary green colors for your base, and then punch up your outfit with some Greenery in prints, scarfs, jewelry, and shoes.

For interiors, incorporate Greenery into the small accents and details of your room—art, plants, contrast welts, etc.  In this regal Douglas Mackie room, thin brushstrokes tracing other shades of green introduces the vibrancy of Greenery into the space.

If you are afraid of applying Greenery tones in fabric and paint, bring this year’s color into your home through nature.  Lemon trees and ferns (Boston ferns, Asparagus Ferns, and Cinnamon Ferns in particular) celebrate this zesty yellow-green color.

“There’s a Japanese concept called ‘forest bathing,’ which says that when you are feeling stressed, one of the best things to do is go walk in the forest. But if you can’t do that, what can you do? Bring green into your environment. Put in on your body, or in your house or near your desk. That symbolic message is very important.” —Leatrice Eiseman

Don’t paint your walls in Greenery; instead enjoy the hopeful exuberance of Pantone’s greenery in the small details in your life.
