Show 'n' Tell - Private Residence Master Bedroom and Bath

I REALLY love what I do!  And as I continue to work I really want there to be soul in each space I design.  How do you do that?  How do you add soul and integrity to your home?    Whenever we start to work with a client we really try to find out as much about them as we can!  What they love, where they’ve been and what they want to be surrounded by.   We look at their collections, their art and help tell their story because that’s what our homes should reflect….our story. The best example I can think of when I think of a home with integrity is the Entrada home we worked on last year for our dear friend Peggy.   They knew exactly what they wanted, a Santa Fe ranch filled with authentic relics and enough wall space to carry their art collections.  When I walk into this space it feels like them and there is no greater compliment than that!

Designing for a Lady

Being a human is great but being a lady is the ultimate!  And Audrey Hepburn was the ultimate lady.  I love that she states that the color pink is a belief and a truth!  I, too, believe in kissing and often wish more would adopt the custom to kiss upon greeting!  I wholeheartedly believe that happy girls are the prettiest girls.  I’m happiest when I am with the people I love and when I’m surrounded by the things that speak to my soul.  Whether that’s the art that tells my story or the mountains that feed my lungs, my surroundings affect the way I feel.

Recently we were asked to design our dear Mrs. Robinson’s daughter’s room.  She is the spitting image of her mama and is a true lady.  This young and fashion forward lil’ dancer gave me so much inspiration to work with.  She already owns a beautiful French bed and dresser so all I needed to do was cake decorate the rest.  Below are all the ingredients it took to make this empty space feel complete and fit for a lady!

Designing for a lady is my absolute favorite because you can be as feminine and ridiculous as you want!  You can use blush and lilac without apprehension and then frost the whole thing in sparkles!  Thank you, thank you Mrs. Robinson for letting me loose on this space.  I’m in love with every sugar-coated corner!

Show n' Tell - Pretty in Pink

Nestled in the hills of Alpine, Utah sits a home with a family of all girls. With its beautiful views, it’s the perfect retreat for this busy bunch. After meeting with the family I found that one daughter in particular was very passionate about pink, and she was adamant that her room be pink. This was a great jumping off point for her bedroom, and from here, I was able to pick the perfect inspiration piece and color pallet. I started with a pretty floral watercolor. The colors and the feel of the piece were just the inspiration that this room needed. Deciding to go pink-on-pink, I had the walls painted a lovely shade of Monticello Rose from Benjamin Moore.  When painting ceilings, instead of using a stark white, I use a very pale shade (almost white) of the wall color. I will have the walls painted the third or fourth color on a paint strip, and the ceiling painted the lightest color on the top of that strip.

Once I had my inspiration and color pallet, the rest of the pieces have come together easily – fresh but very girly to fit this spunky teen’s personality.

After the walls were painted, I walked through the home with the girls to get their approval on their rooms. When this particular daughter saw that her perfect pink dream had come to life, she was beaming with excitement and delight! I have to say, I was equally as delighted that she loved it! I can't wait to see her face when she see's her completed room!

Show n' Tell - Poolside Retreat

Summer is here and I couldn't be more thrilled! This past weekend the sun was officially out and people were camping, barbecuing, and basking by the pool. It dawned on me that I have three solid months to make the most of this, and I'm not going to waste a second.

Being a lover of the outdoors, I opten find myself dreaming of what my ideal poolside would look like, and being a designer, I was actually able to create it... (on paper at least). A favorite client of mine recently purchased a contemporary home, and one of the best features is the infinity pool overlooking our beloved Utah Valley! It is dreamy and perfect for entertaining. The only problem is there is nowhere to sit, eat, or be merry. With such an ideal backdrop I got to work and started to dream of how I'd use the space. poolside chaises were a must for the day and a breezy lounge was where I'd for sure spend my nights. Below are a few of the players that make up this summer oasis in my head! (I hope when it's done I get to come to the party!)

Family Theater -- Finished at Last!

You may remember the young couple that came to us a while back with the request to design their theater room. Well - it is finally done! This amazing, loving, and warm couple was an absolute joy to work with! Their main goal was to inspire evenings at home filled with family and friends--playing games, watching movies, and simply enjoying one another. When we first entered the space, they had already painted and requested we stick with the paint color but everything else could go!

Our young family loved the idea of creating a warm and cozy environment with a modern turn. We knew this push-pull dynamic between the cozy and modern aesthetic was destined to create an interesting and tranquil design. We played with a variety of metals, textures, fabrics, and finishes to draft the ultimate style setting theater.

Just off the theater is a special spot where the kids can play their favorite games, enjoy reading a story, or color a pretty picture all while mom is sitting at her desk getting a little work done. Since this room sits right off the theater, we wanted to create a harmonious flow between the two spaces. We did this with the use of color. However, our large, organic patterns add a fresh and youthful impression to the play room.

I have to say the most rewarding part of my job is getting to know our clients. By the end of every project, it feels as if we were family! This project was no different. A few nights after we installed this beautiful theater, I received a text from my client saying, "We just watched our first movie--just me and my girls--and it was perfect!" Thank you to my client for letting us into your lovely home and into your beautiful life. Now start popping the popcorn!

Rendering At Its Finest

These are just a handful of designers that I learned about in school:

Colefax and Fowler | Mariette Himes Gomez: Rooms | Colefax and Fowler: Interior Inspirations | Roger Banks Pye: Interior Inspirations | Charlotte Moss: Creating a Room

I poured over these books, studied their spaces and admired their techniques. But above all, I fell in love with their ability to sketch! Their words inspired my mind and their drawings ignited my hand.  I couldn't stop!  I was determined to illustrate my ideas as a designer because seeing a room on paper was magic and being able to communicate this information to a client was invaluable!

During college, I worked at a kiosk in the Logan mall selling t-shirts. And in my down time, I taught myself to sketch. I would stare at images in these design books and draw exactly what I saw.  I learned perspective and space planning while admiring the precious details these artists would pencil in.  From the grand window treatments down to the very last last teacup atop a stack of old books, I fell in love!

I've worked at several design firms but none like Alice Lane!  Most often I would only be asked to render if a client was really important or the design was complex but Jessica lets me sketch all day:) When design hours are purchased and we work on a clients home it is expected that a rendering will be included in a presentation!   Majority of people have a hard time seeing the whole picture and that is why they hire us because we've already seen your home finished and its breathtaking!

Below are drawings from a beautiful home we are designing in Arizona.  The home is not complete and we still have more to design but it gives you an idea of how many drawings it takes to complete a home!

I love what I do and Alice Lane allows me to do what I do best! Sketch!

Private Residence - Playroom

It’s time for a reveal on one of our favorite spaces. We started this project a little over a year ago and posted the initial concepts and sketches. We wanted to share how it turned out. We worked side by side with the finish carpenter in creating just the right pattern for the railing and cut-outs.

We had a lot of fun with the playhouse and developing the layout for the built-in kitchen, charming cut-out windows, and gingerbread molding.

The storage in a toy room is essential, to hide puzzles, books, and a few of the grand-babies favorite things.

With construction over, it was time to do the finishing touches with hardware, paint and pillow fabrics.

It’s finished! And as absolutely charming as we imagined!

Thanks to our amazing client and the opportunity to “play” along with her in creating this beautiful space. It brought us back to the time when we were kids, and the imagination that went into the space was limitless.

Show n' Tell - St. George Parade of Homes - The Ferrara at Brookhaven Fields

Remember the homes we were working on last month in the St. George Parade of Homes. You can see our posts about this home, the Ferrara at Brookhaven Fields, here, here, and here. We were able to have one of our favorite photographer's, Nicole Gerulat, come down and shoot each home. Some of you may have stopped by and seen it but for everyone who wasn't able to make it to St. George, here it is... the finished product!

Adding the Last Layer!

The last layer of a home is what gives people the most joy in my opinion.  It is the life stories, the collected art, the family heirlooms and cherished memories you have held onto that give your home soul and conviction!

Recently we were invited to implement this imperative  layer into a home that was almost there!  The homeowner and designer did a wonderful job with the shell of the home and what a pleasure it was to help them take it to the finishline.  Each visit was filled with more pictures, art and records to be framed.   It takes decades to really curate a home and this client has held onto the most beautiful chotskys that we were able to pull from!   Below are just a few of my favorites from these heart filled installs-Enjoy!

The Final Reveal!

Remember our gracious client that let us design a cozy retreat for her guests?  Well - Ta Da - here is the final reveal!  Our client couldn’t be more pleased and neither could her guests!  (Which by the way, haven’t stopped visiting  - we may have made this room a little too inviting!)  This guest bedroom is all about comfort.  We filled the room with luxurious linens, plush pillows, functional storage, loads of seating and whimsical artwork to create a cozy retreat fit for a Queen (and her baby)!  This cocoon of beautiful details will make anyone want to stay in bed all day!

Private Residence - Office

There’s just something about starting with the shell of a room and transforming it from top to bottom that I really love- designing everything from the fireplace and built-ins, to finishes and furniture, and getting to really transform a room to resemble our client is just so inspiring. For this particular project, I had the opportunity to work with the husband of a client on his sophisticated office/man cave.   He wanted to create a place where he could work or relax, and where his kids could be near him while they did homework- picture a cozy fireplace, gorgeous cabinetry, and loads of books!

We wanted the room to feel enveloped and handsome, so we selected a rich walnut for all the cabinetry and built-ins. To give contrast to the space, we selected a limestone fireplace and then played with parchment and gray tones in the furniture.

We anchored the room with a tufted sofa in a cognac colored leather and incorporated a sculptural chair to add some flair. Instead of a traditional cocktail table, we selected two weighted ottomans in a luxurious gray velvet. In addition to a built-in desk under the window, our client wanted a large table in the center of the room that he and his kiddos could pull up to. We selected a large leather-wrapped table and a pair of chairs upholstered in a graphic fabric. Now, imagine this whole scene against a herringbone wood floor- yep, that happened.

This room is going to be absolutely fantastic- I can’t wait for the final reveal of this perfect den!
